"The Beach of Reykjavik"
The Nauthólsvík Beach is located where people used to take sea baths. Geothermical water from Reykjavík Energy is provided into two hot tubs as into the sea in the bay wich has been separated with a wall to the east to minimize the water change. A part of the bay is still open and allowes the sea to mix with the geothermical water. The lagoon is 1.500-4.000 m2 depending on the tide. The hot water is not mixed with chlorine. The sand on the beach is adventive shell sand. There is a great indoor changing facilite. Inside is also a shop with beverages and snacks. Visitors are supposed to take their clothing with them after changing but there is a service to store your clothing for a small fee. The first hot tub is located below the stairs right in front of the service center. The temperature is 38 °C. The second hot tub is located in the lagoon and has the temperature of 25-30 °C. The temperature of the lagoon variates from the climate temperature and the climate warmth of the sea up to 28 °C. The hot tubs variate in depth and are between 0,5-0,7 m in the lagoon but can become up to 3,8 m in the high tide. The compound is always open but the service center is only open during the summer, from may 15th til 15th of september between 10:00 og 20:00. No hot water is provided to the hot tubs nor the lagoon outside of the service hours.
In the summer of 2000 was the opening of a spectacular thermal beach in Nauthólsvík. Massive sea walls were built and golden shellsand was pumped inside them. Within the walls is a beatiful lagoon where the cold sea and geothermal water become as one. These surroundings remind more of the beaches of the mediterranean ocean than a small bay in the northest capital of the world located in the North-Atlantic ocean. The goal of these constructions was to build a diverse outdoor recreational area with a focus point on outdoor activities, sunbathing, sea baths and sailing in homage of former use of the area.
In the summer of 2001 the service center of the Thermal beach opened. There is a changing facilite and a shower facilite and a service to buy snacks and beverages. In front of the service center is a long shallow pool wich is around 30°-35°C. In the shallow end of the sea shore is a geothermal hot tub wich heats up the lagoon but is also a nice to sit in. The thermal beach has been a raving success since it opened. A great many have gone and sun bathed on sunny days.
There are around 120.000 guests in average who attend the thermal beach each year. So it is save to say that the beach has firmly put it's mark as the paradise of the city landscape wich equally atractes locals as well as foreign guests
Children under the age of 8 must have adult supervision, at least 14 years of age or above. It is recomended that each adult should have two children max under its supervision on the beach. The guests on the beach are there on their own responsibility, there is security on the compound but there is no children supervison provided.
